“Can I really buy a house at the mall?”

July 29, 2008 · Jean Joh

This question was posed to me as I sat at our Prudential kiosk in the Serramonte Mall.  I was caught a little off guard.  “Well, sort of…” was my awkward response.  The amiable woman followed up with another question, “So, can I just buy a house here like a pair of shoes and then return it if it doesn’t fit?”  We had a nice laugh together over that one.

While it’s not quite true that one can buy a house at the mall, it IS possible to get valuable information about what homes are available and about the real estate market in general.  Our Prudential office has a kiosk at both the Tanforan Shopping Center in San Bruno and Serramonte in Daly City.  Agents from our office take turns to man these kiosks throughout the day, and I’ve had some interesting encounters during my times there.

I’ve met a wide range of people, including those visiting from places as far away as London and Jakarta.  We discuss topics like the current mortgage crisis, the short sales phenomenon, and the latest home prices in San Bruno, Daly City, South San Francisco, Millbrae and beyond.  Most are just curious to see what’s happening in the market, but some have been willing to share with me their specific real estate issues and needs.

Sometimes, I meet those who are struggling with their current mortgages and need information (and a sense of hope) about the different options available to them.  At other times, I get to share in the excitement of first-time homebuyers who discover that they might actually be able to afford a home in the Bay Area.  Of course, there are those who just want to know the directions to the nearest restroom, but all in all, it’s been an enjoyable experience that fulfills one of the chief reasons why I became a real estate agent in the first place:  the chance to meet new people and to provide service and information as they make decisions on one of the most important aspects of their lives.  It may sound corny, but it’s true.

So, can you really buy a house at the mall?  Well, maybe not on the spot, but you might meet someone who can help you get one step closer.

Jean, This is so true. My last client did start buying a house from Serramonte mall. That’s where we met. This is a great article!
