Winter is in the air

December 16, 2008 · Florie Vasquez

Winter is in the air.  Last night was particularly cold and my daughter was in a troubled state so I asked her what was wrong.  She told me that she was worried about the homeless man who camps out by the park where she plays ball in the summer…  Wow, that put things in perspective.

This year has had ups and downs for all of us as every year does.  Try to remember one thing, no matter how good or how bad it gets, it will pass.  Yes sometimes it may feel like you are stuck in molasses believe it or not, it will all work itself out even though it may not seem that way, it does.  When it gets hard like that try taking a deep breath and embrace the change because invited or not, it is coming.  Perhaps focusing your energy on something for charity can make better use of your time.  It seems that nobody has the extra money needed for charity but donating blankets, clothes, food or even a toy at a local shelter can make a huge difference. This time of year especially, recognize there is someone out there who certainly has it worse than you do and on the flip side of that there is someone who has it better.  Remember if you don’t like how things are going, know that you are in the driver’s seat and you can initiate the change for the better rather than waiting for it to happen to you. Perseverance is the key; keep trying until things start going the way you want them to.

So help someone less fortunate or if you are in a bind ask for help.  Don’t forget to thank those that have helped in any way big or small, throughout the year. Here is a beautiful quote that sums it up Blessed are those who can give without remembering and take without forgetting. - Elizabeth Bibesco
Wishing a happy holiday, whichever one you may celebrate, and healthy & prosperous New Year to you and yours.

thank you Florie, your words are so true and so often forgotten, I am reminded by the truth, you don’t have to have money or buy stuff, (my words) but we all have things at home that we consider a pain, or taking space that others would be so thankful to receive. i once read that if everyone contributed one dollar, over 10,000 people would be not be hungry for a week, and that was only in the bay area.
lots to think about, thank you

Your article really brought home that, no matter how bad things sometimes seem, there is always someone else suffering much more than you. Those of us that have people who care about us and worry about us are, truly, the luckiest people in the world.

Thanks for your words reminding us all of what’s really important. I saw on the news this morning that more than 80 homeless people have died this year alone in Santa Clara county – a staggering number. I’m sure it’s probably much worse in colder parts of our nation, esp where they’ve been experiencing power outages. I, for one, have so much to be grateful for and hope to find more ways to help others less fortunate.

Thanks for that great post, Florie! I know who that homeless man is too and hope he has a place to sleep in this cold weather! Your post reminds me of the quote that says: “There once was a man who was sad because he had no shoes until he met a man who had no feet!” Thanks again for your reminder!
