Say Goodbye to an Old Friend

January 13, 2009 · Terry Birt

Since I have lived in Millbrae, my Saturday ritual consisted of a walk downtown to the farmers market, a trip to Starbucks and end up at Mervyn’s.  When it was announced that Mervyn’s was closing, my initial response was “how sad” then my second thought was how long the building was going to remain empty.

I started to get excited because there would be a great sale, to unload the merchandise. So the plan was to stake it out until the prices bottom out to take advantage of the sales.  About three weeks prior to closing, I accomplished my mission and felt great about all the great  savings I made.

Two days after Christmas, I went by to the store to check it out.  Then it really hit me.  The second floor was filled with empty shelves; the first floor had all of its remaining merchandise centralized in one area.  The sale clearance banners hanging from the ceilings stood out among the bare aisles.  I lost an old friend.

The wonderful staff, who helped me to the car with my bags, the sales rep who helped me find that last missing washcloth to match a set and the wonderful community functions they participated in.  What a great loss.

Terry, as we mature, we lose lots of old friends, real and not. I grew up in south san francisco and there are so many landmarks up and down the peninsula that are gone. thats why memories are special. great post

Sad to lose Mervyn’s but fortunate for the City of Millbrae that Kohl’s will be coming in and there will not be a major vacancy that woudl have spill over effects on other merchants.

Kohls sounds nice! I will miss Mervyn’s, too. Heck, I miss Playland at the Ocean Beach!

Terry, I’m with you…so sad to see them go. I am looking forward to seeing what Kohl’s has for the kids. I’ve bought most of my kids clothes from Mervyns.

    Terry,
I guess it is a sign of the times (ecomonic climate), but it is also exciting that Kohl’s will come right in.

Me too! Saturday mornings in Millbrae will not be the same without Mervyns. I guess it’s good that Kohl’s is already to set to go in, but more than anything, it’s just a matter of change from what I’ve gotten used to seeing. It’s nice to see, however, that downtown Millbrae is continuing to develop and grow in other ways.

    Hi Terry,
Yes, it is sad to see Mervyns close. Glad you were able to accomplish your mission. Let’s see what Kohl’s will have to offer.

    Terry,

That site has been reincarnated several times!

Before it became Mervyns, it was Britts.

I can remember as a little kid, going there and they had a candy counter right by the escalators.

Needless to say when we went there, I had to get some candy!

    Brian
