YES YOU CAN (Buy a Home)!!
I just met with some new clients for a Buyer Consultation, a complimentary service I routinely offer before going out to view homes with anyone. These clients are newlyweds, just starting out in the home buying process, and they were not even sure if they would be able to buy a home at this point, not having had a chance to save up much money for a down payment yet. With their permission, I also invited a mortgage broker to join us for this meeting, so that they might be able to get a better idea of their situation and what they needed to do in order to prepare for their purchase. Well, at the end of the meeting, they (and I) were excited to discover that YES, it would actually be possible for them to purchase a home in this area and perhaps much sooner than they had anticipated.
Want to buy a home but not sure if you can? Why not find out? Get in touch with a knowledgeable real estate agent who can provide information on the real estate market in your area and also help you assess your situation. In addition, speak with a qualified loan agent or mortgage broker to talk through your finances and find out how much you can afford. With interest rates at historical lows, homes at much more affordable levels, the increasing availability of FHA loans (which require only a 3.5% down payment) and VA loans (which require none), and many special programs for first-time home buyers, you may be pleasantly surprised at the results.
I’m thankful that my clients were willing to meet and find out what their options are, and I was glad to share in their excitement when they found out that they were in a good position to purchase a home. I’ll follow up this blog with a list of some common misconceptions that home buyers may have about the real estate market today, but my main message today is this: Don’t let the “doom and gloom” in the news discourage you from seeing the possibilities. Look into it and you might discover that your dream home is much closer than you think.

great story Jean, amazing how much mis- information is out there that confuses folks everyday. the message might include “if there is a will, there just might be a way”, and it costs nothing except a little time to find out. Looking forward to the follow up information
Hi Jean, great posting on sharing the experience of working with first-time homebuyers! Kudos to your clients for taking the very important first step of getting consultation and pre-qualify with a lender (before they look for properties). I am glad that they committed themselves in the homebuying process by working with a professional agent like you with open communications and an open mind. There seems to be a pattern that the more the clients are open to expressing their needs, preferences, and financial capacity, etc., to their agents, the more successful and sooner they will be at finding their dream home. Best wishes to you and your clients on buying their first home!
Jean,
Very well written.

Hi Jean,
It is great to see that new homebuyers can indeed enjoy the American Dream and own their first house. Keep up the good work!

Jean,
Your clients took probably the most courageous step in the home buying process. That is meeting with you!
People have a fear of the unknown, and the homebuying process can create that fear, but once they are patiently educated, questions and concerns answered, etc. you are helping them with something they will most likely benefit from thier entire lives!
