The “Runaway Buyer”…

March 12, 2009 · Nicole Machado

pk-grannyJust a quick post on a funny note… I have encountered a “runaway” buyer at two of my open houses in South San Francisco, two months apart from each other in two different neighborhoods. The first time I met her; she was so nice and friendly and seemed genuinely interested in the home. She said she liked it so much she wanted her husband to see it (he was waiting in the car). I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but once she went out to the car the husband slammed on the accelerator and took off down the street. I thought it was strange, but in this business nothing fazes me. It was about two months later when I encountered the “runaway” again. Since it was a couple months later, I didn’t recognize her right away. She of course loved the house again, told me her whole spiel and then said; let me go get my husband. That’s when it clicked and I knew it was her! Sure enough, the husband slammed on the accelerator and took off down the street. I was laughing hysterical as I had been duped again by the “runaway buyer”! So if you’re out at an open house and a little lady comes in you may be encountering the “runaway” buyer!  Any ideas on why this couple does this??? Could it be her exercise? I mean she does book it back to the car pretty fast. Is it something to pass the time on the weekends? Maybe they even trade off at each open house? Or maybe she is just too nice to tell us Realtors she is not interested in the house and doesn’t want us to keep questioning her. We’re not that scary are we? Any comments or opinions, have you been duped by the “runaway” buyer too?

    Nicole,

That is a funny story, and who knows what is going through her mind? But since you are so nice to her, if she does have a purpose in her running around, maybe you get contacted by her.

Nicole, thanks for the chuckle. I haven’t encountered this runaway buyer yet, but have found it not too uncommon to have this type of thing happen at open houses or the mall kiosks. I guess people are afraid that we are typical sales people who will try to get their personal info and then hound them. We all have to work hard to help people see that we’re offering a service and not simply going after a sale. Perhaps next time, you should offer to get her husband for her and just run out to the car first…:*)

She must have shown her husband the financing sheet… ;-)

    Nicole,
Thanks for sharing. I haven’t heard of a story quite like yours but I’m sure over time I will hear more interesting ones. I do like Jean’s idea of offering to get her husband for her, I’m sure that would make her laugh. Take care,

Nicole, I am curious to know why she did that. I hope I can meet her one day at one of my open houses.
    Thanks for sharing.

That is hilarious. Make sure you check the medicine cabinets. We had a problem with that down here!

Could she be casing the home to break into later?
That is what comes to my devious mind.
