There is no “I” in Real Estate Team!

March 2, 2009 · Julie Cleland

You’ve decided to buy or sell a house so you gather all the players you’re going to need around you. You have your lender, your Realtor ®, escrow officers and any inspectors needed. You’ve gathered them around with the intention of meeting your goal of buying or selling that home. You’re all on the same page so how hard will it be to get along. That depends.

Through the course of your search and purchase there will be loads of information flying around you. Everyone will have an opinion from family, friends, and even the guy that makes your coffee in the morning, on how you should proceed. It is now that you need to stay focused on the professionals on your team. This can be easy when everyone is of like mind but it can be incredibly difficult when strong disagreements erupt between you, the client, and the professionals around you.

I’ve been in the position of expressing an opinion a client was not happy with. The knee-jerk reaction can often be “you’re just trying to close a deal.”. And in fact, you’re right. I will respectfully remind you that is what I was hired to do. Just because the news or opinion isn’t what you want it to be doesn’t make it wrong. Do the professionals have all the answers? Not necessarily, but they have taken a great deal of time to learn the market, information on particular homes, and are constantly updating themselves on issues connected to real estate. While I appreciate your uncle, who bought a house 10 years ago, may have useful information it shouldn’t be weighed more heavily because it’s what you want to hear. Everyone you’ve gathered around you has your interest in mind. While you might not agree, it is important that you allow those you’ve hired to give you their honest opinion and the reasons for it. It’s equally critical that you share all facts with your teammates if you expect the best advice possible for your behalf. While you are ultimately the owner of the team, for the best results you need to let each member do what it is they do best.

It truly is a TEAM effort and everyone has to be working together to make it work!

    Julie,

    Excellent topic!

    We have all run into
“experts” who give free advice, and you get what you pay for.

    Great post Julie,
Although most of my experiences have been positive working with others there are those few times where things became difficult because differences of opinions or personalities. It is extremely important that everyone is on the same page. Having the same goal goes a long way to helping everyone work together and in the end the “team” should be able to accomplish the goal together.
