What lays behind the front door?

March 9, 2009 · Francis G. Bautista

front-doorHave you ever wondered how people live? I have always been fascinated by the interior of homes, what lies inside and how people live. Perhaps its my education and background in interior design/art history or maybe curiosity.

Well, boy was I taken aback and surprised to see what I found in this one particular home in Daly City.  It was new on the market, a short sale so I previewed it for my clients prior to showing it on Sunday. The listing agent did forewarn me that the home was in shambles. And Yes it was a mess, however I did not make it down to the garage/basement that day because it was dark and the electricity was shut off and boy was I in for a big surprise. I forewarned my clients of the condition and asked them to bring a flashlight. We were upstairs (the wife and I) when we heard a loud yell from the basement (the husband) “Oh my god” or something to that affect. Boy oh boy were we surprised when the flashlight shed light in the basement. We are talking a full on hydroponic weed growing machine. And when I say ”weed” I’m not talking about the pesky garden kind.  The basement was dark and we had to find our way around via the flashlight were we found rows and rows of huge plastic trays, remnants of the green stuff in buckets, commercial fans, an elaborate half hazard “man-made” ventilation system the vented to outside and enough light fixtures with huge bulbs that could put a baseball field to shame. Well…OK, perhaps not a professional baseball field but a city baseball field for sure. It explains the condition of the upstairs area as if someone grabbed what they could and ran away fast and I mean real fast. The house remains full of personal belongings, this explains the messy shambled condition.

I realize this may not be informative for the potential buyer or seller, however it is just plain intriguing.  And although this home may or may not have been listed by choice it is perhaps a good reminder that when listing your home for sale…put everything (that you do not want people to see) properly away. This brings me back to my point of how fascinating it is how people live.

You never know what you are going to find — that is why previews are so important. there are plenty of stories to be told.

Funny story! I’ve found my share of interesting things when previewing homes for clients as well, but nothing as memorable as yours. Jean

Great story and great point previewing homes for clients. I believe I have saved my clients and I a good amount of time by previewing property for them when possible. Thanks again for sharing your story.
