San Bruno Posy Parade 2009

April 23, 2009 · Karin Cunningham

The Posy Parade in San Bruno is held every year in June. It is put on by the San Bruno Lion’s Club. This year it will be on Sun. June 7th at 1:00. The theme this year is “The Many Cultures of San Bruno”! It is a parade dedicated to children and it’s themes are always deocrated with flowers!

At its height in the 1960s, the parade attracted as many as 3 thousand participants and 20 to 30 thousand spectators. This year is the 69th Annual Posy Parade in San Bruno. The parade includes all of our baseball teams, school floats, orginization floats, marching bands, a Posy Parade princess and her court.  The mayor passes by in a fire truck and the city council in old fashioned cars throw candy to the crowds who are lining the street! The end of the Posy Parade is in San Bruno Park which holds a ceremony for the best floats, hot dog sales and 2 MAJOR San Bruno baseball games! See you Sunday June 7th for the 69th Annual Posy Parade in San Bruno, Ca.!

The Posy Parade is a wonderful San Bruno tradition
that I participated in as a kid and later on as a San Bruno Lion.

The Lions were the main sponsor, and all the members worked on it.

It is very unique that it is not “commercial” but really exists for the children.

It’s a true jewel of the community and thanks for the notice that it will be here soon!

    Hi Karin,

Great information on the Posy Parade – I might ad that it is the oldest children’s parade in the country!

    See you there.

    Karin,

I have lived or worked everday in San Bruno since I moved out here from the East Coast in 1976. For some reason San Bruno does not carry the best perception. I don’t really understand. It has so much to offer with the Posey Parade being one of them. San Bruno is very Family orientated. You know another tidbit I recently read about San Bruno is that is has more parks per capita than any city on the peninsula.
Keep up the Great San Bruno work.

I absolutely love the Posy Parade. It is the one day that our entire community can get together and enjoy San Bruno. I performed in it last year as a flag girl for Parkside INtermediate… so much fun to walk down the streets looking at all the people who are enjoying the parade. Great description of this timeless parade!

Thanks for your post Koreena! Did you participate this year? Yesterday’s parade was so AWESOME, I thought! I am going to write about it and post some of the pictures that I took!

    Hello

I so enjoyed reading your recent article about the Posey Parade. Several
years ago I contributed all of the pictures at the link you provided, they
were in our old family albums. The picture used in your article featured
our neighbors on 5th Avenue. Each year our neighborhood got together and
made a float with flowers from our neighbors’ yards and those contributed by
local florists. A neighbor’s garage was used to assemble the float. The
picture at the very bottom of the link is me, Evelyn Leech Marten. Each
year my family staked out our spot on the curb in front of then Maule Drug
store to watch the parade. It was great fun to see our friends pass by.

I now live in Sonoma County but frequently visit our little family home on
    5th Avenue.

I will be sure to attend next year’s 70th Posey Parade. The parade is quite
different from the huge floats I remember, but I am so pleased San Bruno
continues the long tradition of a fun community event.

    Evelyn Marten
