“You’re The Best”
That is a comment I received recently. Can you guess from whom? After 30 years of marriage my wife does not tell me that anymore. My mom; maybe; but she didn’t. This comment came from an agent I was in contract with. I removed contingencies on time. Wow!! I lived up to my legal obligation and she took the time to comment “You’re The Best”. It should not be that way. We as Real Estate professionals should live up to our legal obligations and we should treat each other and our clients with more respect. We should all live up to our legal obligations or request an extension in a timely manner. This should be the norm not an oddity.
Returning phone calls and emails is an activity us Realtors, lenders, and title people also need to improve on. Besides professionalism responding back to emails and phone calls in a timely fashion is proper manners, etiquette, and common courtesy. It has become common place for us to say “Thanks for returning the call” because so few do on the first call. That is absurd. It is rude. It is a waste of everyone’s time and most of all it does not show well to our clients if we say “I have not heard back yet”.
A quick call even if you don’t have an answer. If you don’t have the answer it would be polite and professional to call and say “I do not have an answer yet but I am working on it and will update you as soon I know something. You better call with the update. If the update is taking a longer than normal time frame a follow up call keeps the process running smooth. You don’t want to speak to the person; leave a message when you do not expect the person to answer, but return the call. How many times does a listing agent return the call for showing or offer information after the fact or not even at all. That is ridiculous. It is an embarrassment to our industry. Let’s all try to improve!!! Let’s check messages more often and return the calls in a timely fashion. It will create less stress and we will be more productive.

I couldn’t agree more with your blog. Our industry does need to polish up on our professional etiquette skills.
Lee,
Thank you for the much needed reminder about business etiquette.
Treat others as you wish to be treated.
I hope that all who read this, get some hints, but I would suspect that they already have good habits.
Now, as far as what your wife thinks, I am not going to comment.

Lee,
Timely follow up is the sign of a professional and will get you comments saying You’re the best!”
Good job.
Larry
Great advise Lee, an agent not returning a call is actually leaving a message, one than silently says something is wrong, and sadly that is not always the case. As you stated one should never be to busy to communicate information that is vital to the other parties.
For some i suspect it is just poor habits, others are rude, and of course there are the professionals who have strong values, coupled with great skills wrapped up in a high level of integrity. Thats the message the other agent was thanking you for.
Great Lee!
I feel exactly the same way you to. I think it is just common courtesy and of course professionalism. The real estate profession would be much more productive and efficient if we all treated each other like we would like to be treated. Keep up the great work lee!
